Dr.Mae Jemison is the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license.

Dr. Mae Jemison was a Peace Corps Volunteer physician in Sierra Leone and Liberia before applying to join the National Aeronautics and Space Administrator’s Astronaut (NASA) Training Program.  On her space flight, she took a West African statueete, a poster of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and a photo of aviator Bessie Coleman.
